Augusta is a small town at the southern end of the Margaret River region. In the bad old days it was a whaling town, but nowadays it is a holiday and fishing village. The waters here were clear like further east at Windy Harbour, but it was also much more touristy – a bit of a shock after a few days in the ‘wilds’ of the Southern Forests.

After spending much of the morning close to the sea, we ventured back inland to have a look at Mount Chudalup. Mount Chudalup is a granite tor in the middle of miles of coastal swamp and heath. It’s 187 metres high and took some climbing. The track started in karri forest, but quickly changed to heath the higher we went. From the top, you can see what kind of country it was we were in.
