A brief glimpse of an autumn evening (pre-daylight-savings) in Surry Hills on film.
Outside of Central Station everyone was enjoying a warm evening out, probably one of the last before winter.
Scooters abound in the side streets – this one is distinctly Italian themed.
In Sydney, traditional pub interiors are rapidly disappearing, so it’s good to see this specimen in Surry Hills.
Following on from colour we explored the art of composing a photograph. When photography just got going, people were composing photos like they composed paintings. We talked about conventional composition techniques. After class, I walked back into the city via the backstreets to practise a few techniques.
Like showing perspective (in this case, diminishing) to give the photo depth.
And repetition to lead the eye.
With cupcakes baked, we began the all important bit – decorating!
There was a choice of marzipan and butterscotch icing, and 3 types of chocolate, along with other goodies.
Some people took decorating very, very seriously.
Me, I found that I have no patience for really fiddly things, so my cupcakes turned out a bit, er, dodgy. But there were some that looked great and rather professional.
Our teacher didn’t really spend too much time over the making of the batter, but I know how important it is to get it to the light and fluffy stage after having a few disasters.
Then all that’s left is to spoon the batter into the cases, with the help of an ice cream scooper. Good trick, that.
But what we were at Sparkle Cupcakery for is, of course, cupcakes. There was a delectable selection at the shop.
However we came to create them. Later, you’ll see how close we got.
Smoked meat was the sandwich theme: smoked chicken and smoked salmon to be precise. And to follow, shortbread creams.
At Sparkle Cupcakery in Surry Hills on Saturday for a Hen’s Day activity. Afternoon ‘tea’ always goes off with a bang with it begins with sparkling and strawberries dipped in chocolate.
