For a change, a black and white photograph of the beach in shadow. I think winter lends itself to beautiful monochrome photos.

Winter Walk – A Dog Owner’s Convention
Apologies for the lack of posts the last two weeks. BB and I have been on the road around NSW. We’re almost on the home stretch and have many photos to show you, but until then here are a few posts about our last walk along Umina Beach. There seemed to be a dog owner’s convention – a large dog owner’s convention – that seemed to freak our little beagle right out.

Winter Drive – Going Home
Winter Drive – Sandstone
After the winery we drove back to the village in search of lunch. There was of course the famous Wollombi pub, the favourite haunt of all those bikers on the road, but we chose instead a quieter cafe set in an old weatherboard cottage just around the corner. Along the way we passed St Michael’s, the old Catholic church. The present church was built in the 1890’s after the original church was flooded, using the rough hand-hewn sandstone blocks from the first church. You can still see its foundations right next to the ‘new’ church.
Winter Drive – Vines
To appreciate just how small this winery is, this is the extent of its vineyard. The owner took us personally through his wines, and in the end we bought a couple of bottles of shiraz, semillion, and a vibrant rose (stocking up for next summer).
In the meantime, the beagle (who went along with us) had other ideas – getting acquainted with the bull in the vineyard.
You won’t win this battle, beagle.
Winter Drive – A Wine Stop
Our destination for the day was the village of Wollombi, on the southern boundary of the Hunter Valley. The village itself was rather cute, if not quite peaceful due to the proliferation of weekend motor bike riders, but being wine drinkers we wanted to explore a winery. We found one in Wollombi Wines.
A pair of old Morris Minor utes declare that this isn’t a big place, and indeed the cellar door was simply a little cottage. As for the little utes, they appear to be in good nick.
