Another common flower in the tropics is the orchid. Here is a nice yellow specimen.

You can’t be in the tropics and not see a hibiscus. I might have quite a few hibiscus shrubs in my own garden, but seeing them in their natural environment feels right.

I’ll interlude the sights I saw in Bali with some tropical flora. Being from Sydney, these are rather exotic to me.
The Tops – Flora and Moss
Some more pretty sub-alpine daisies – this time in a fetching shade of pink.
And an interesting monochrome moss on the gums. In fact, there were lots interesting mosses around, which I’ll post about soon.

We made our way up to the Barrington Tops via a pot-holed gravel road. It was surprisingly cool up there after the humidity of the plains below, and from first glance it was obvious that we were in a sub-alpine area – not dissimilar to Thredbo. Well, we were 1,200m above sea-level.
There were little white flowers.
And the new growth on the bushes were vibrant to say the least.

Being mid-spring, there were a few flowers around. The most striking however were small and purple.
This one was from a type of grass.
This one was a little violet of some kind.

We end our wander with a typical sight on the North Island coast – manuka flowers. How delicate they are!
Coastal Flora
Walking around Eden, we saw plenty of coastal flora. Some, like the banksia, are native.
But some, like the red hot poker, aren’t, even though they grow well in the sandy, rocky landscape.
