Taking a closer look of the Lord of the Forest, much of the volume is actually it the branches. You can fit a colony in there.

The biggest trees are however further in. Tane Mahuta – Lord of the Forest – has a girth of 13.7 metres, is over 50 metres tall, and has an estimated age of 1,250 to 2,500 years. That’s some tree.

But the main attractions of Waipoua Forest are the kauri trees. These trees have long been protected from loggers, and thank goodness they are, because they are magnificent.

This particular strand of trees are called the Four Sisters.

This week we’re going to wandering around the most famous strand of forest in New Zealand’s Northland – the Waipoua Forest. Being in Northland this forest is sub-tropical – temperate. On the forest floor, there are all sorts of ferns, including NZ’s national symbol, the silver fern.
