But the main attractions of Waipoua Forest are the kauri trees. These trees have long been protected from loggers, and thank goodness they are, because they are magnificent.
This particular strand of trees are called the Four Sisters.

Glimpses of a Forest – Part 1
This week we’re going to wandering around the most famous strand of forest in New Zealand’s Northland – the Waipoua Forest. Being in Northland this forest is sub-tropical – temperate. On the forest floor, there are all sorts of ferns, including NZ’s national symbol, the silver fern.
High Tea – Part 5
Finally, I like the modern take on the tiered high tea platters. This is for one person! The room too was lovely, facing a courtyard.
That’s the end of high tea. Not something for the every day, but it’s definitely worth going into the city for on a weekend.

My favourite (and a lot of people’s favourite) of the afternoon – the cherry ripe cake. Well, that’s what I call it anyway, because it really does taste like a luxurious version of the good old Cherry Ripe chocolate bar.

Something more dainty – a mini peach macaron and a Japanese-style cheesecake. The macaron was so-so, but the cheesecake was heavenly.

M has a sweet tooth, so on her Hen’s Day we decided to go out to high tea. I’d been researching the high teas given by various Sydney establishments, and decided on the Sofitel Wentworth hotel. They seemed to have a good deal and high quality food. I wasn’t disappointed.
First we attacked the savouries of chicken and mayo sandwiches, sour cream and mushroom choux bun, and smoked salmon roll. But it was the sweets that we were after. We started with scones.

While the picnic area was chockers with picnicker – grannies, parents, kids, babies, dogs – the rock platform was rather empty. I know where I’d rather be.

Ah, Terrible Terrigal. It’s my first visit in over 10 years and I wanted to get out right away. It was a sunny end of winter weekend, and although it might not seem like it from this photo it seemed that half Sydney was camped out there. Terrible. I’m ever so glad that BB’s place is in relatively tranquil Umina Beach.
